Like architecture enthusiasts across the globe, we were saddened by yesterday’s fire at Notre Dame. Notre Dame was built on the ruins of earlier churches and the construction went on for decades, but most of the work was done between 1160 and 1250. This hallmark has long been admired as one of the most recognizable examples of Gothic architecture. While the overall building has an overarching design concept, it is the individual carvings, completed by countless artists, that demonstrate great variety and provide insight into the way people of this period in European history felt.
