WAYNE FINGER LAKES BOCES
P-Tech Space
Location: Newark, NY
Completed: Spring 2020
Program: P-tech
Construction Type: Renovation
This leased project for Pathways in Technology Early College High School (P-TECH) is located in a shared facility with Finger Lakes Community College. This High School to College context involved the renovation of approximately 30,000 SF of former factory space into a flexible STEM learning environment for Grades 9-14. Providing a college-like atmosphere was a project goal, so the main entrance to the school includes a lobby/food court with adjacent full cooking/serving kitchen. In addition, a faculty workroom with vision panels overlook the lobby and provide easy student access for mentoring and tutoring assistance. Operable partitions between instructional areas were key in providing a dynamic teaching/learning environment, where changing needs for lecture, demonstration, practice, discussion, reading, and assembly could readily be accomplished. In fact, when two of the larger classrooms at the center of the school open their operable partitions to the corridor, a space of 4,000 SF is created for school productions and functions.
The renovation area had very little exterior wall exposure, so natural light was creatively brought into the classroom spaces through a series of solartubes in the roof. In addition to flexible interchangeable classrooms with adjacent pull-out spaces, the build-out included a Makerspace, and Labs for Chemistry, Networking and Technology. Students and faculty moved into the space for the 2019-20 school year.
