Dynamic Spaces for Performance and Athletics

The CNS High School Capital Improvement Project was a comprehensive, multi-phased effort in which the design team focused on modernizing the school’s core performance, athletic, and support spaces while addressing critical mechanical infrastructure needs.

At the foundation of the project was a full replacement and upgrade of the mechanical systems located within the crawlspace and the major spaces they support, ensuring long-term performance, efficiency, and reliability for the building’s most heavily used areas.

The Theater & Auditorium

A centerpiece of the project was the complete renovation of the auditorium.

Beyond the interior upgrades, the space now features a brand-new fly tower designed to support advanced stage rigging, lighting, and theatrical set functionality, developed through close collaboration between the design team, the district, and key personnel.

The interior of the auditorium was transformed through all-new seating, flooring, and acoustical wall treatments.

Custom illuminated accent panels, designed to mimic a “starry” effect, pay tribute to the district’s Northstars identity while creating a memorable visual for the space.

These aesthetic upgrades are complemented by state-of-the-art theatrical lighting and audiovisual systems, elevating the auditorium’s technical capabilities and expanding its potential for performances, assemblies, and community events.

Athletic Facilities

The gymnasium underwent a similarly extensive renovation shaped by input from athletic staff and administrators.

The design team focused on improving the flexibility and use of the space as well as spectator experience, resulting in new athletic wood flooring, safety padding, basketball backstops, bleachers, fresh paint, a new press box, and modernized A/V equipment.

Together, these improvements significantly enhance the school’s robust athletic programming.

Community & Connection

Connecting the gymnasium and auditorium, the shared lobby was redesigned to serve as a warm, inviting hub at the heart of the building.

The material palette blends rich wood paneling, echoing the aesthetic of the auditorium, with the district’s signature blue and green, creating a cohesive transition between the two major spaces and reinforcing school identity.

Project Impact

Together, the upgrades completed through the project reflect a strong partnership between the district and design team and represent a significant investment in student experience, school identity, building performance, and community engagement.

The result is a revitalized campus core that supports learning, athletics, and the arts with modern, flexible, and inspiring environments.

Let’s create.

We believe architecture should be accessible, sustainable, and meaningful, with an emphasis on design that makes a positive and lasting impact.
