Daylight as a Tool for Collaboration
The Media Center at Adirondack CSD was an outdated high school space from the 1970s with various small renovations throughout the years. The space had uninviting dark wood book shelving, wooden tables and chairs, and wood trim throughout with under-utilized and under-performing secondary spaces and rooms filled to the brim with storage items.
The district recognized the need to modernize and renovate the space to meet the needs of today’s students as well as to better utilize their secondary square footage spaces.

With brighter walls, new designs to the floor, casework, and ceiling, along with all new lighting, the space is warm and inviting.
Flexible loose furniture, plenty of power outlets and WiFi access allow students to utilize spaces throughout as small groups or as an individual.
Reduced perimeter book shelving and low center shelving allow the space to be open with views to all the areas for ease of supervision.
Direct access from the Media Center to the exterior courtyard allows teachers and students to utilize the often-underused courtyard space for group or independent learning in a natural environment.
Overall, the district set out to make this space warm, inviting and focused on student learning and well-being.
