Modernized learning, athletic, and student support spaces across two campuses
Cortland City School District’s multi-phased renovation project reimagined key educational, athletic, and student support spaces at Randall Middle School and Cortland Junior/Senior High School. Designed to improve accessibility, safety, collaboration, and long-term functionality, the project focused on creating modern environments that better support students, staff, and the broader school community.
Through close coordination with district leadership, faculty, and stakeholders, the work balanced targeted program improvements with building-wide upgrades that enhance both daily operations and the student experience.
Advancing Athletics and Wellness
At Cortland Junior/Senior High School, athletic spaces were reimagined to better support students, coaches, and physical education programs. Renovations to locker rooms, the weight room, and wrestling room created more efficient layouts and improved accessibility, while a new multi-purpose Fitness Center provides space for both athletic training and instruction.
Updated finishes, improved organization, and durable materials help create athletic environments that are functional, accessible, and aligned with the needs of the school community.
Custom environmental branding reinforces school pride throughout the athletic spaces. In the corridor, original artwork celebrates Cortland’s athletic tradition, connecting decades-old photographs with today’s student-athletes.
Supporting Modern Learning
Academic improvements at the Junior/Senior High School included the modernization of a seventh-grade science classroom with upgraded technology and electrical infrastructure, expanded centralized IT office and storage space adjacent to the library, and a new Library Maker Space designed to support creativity and hands-on learning.
Additional updates included replacement of aging wood doors and hardware throughout original classroom wings, enhanced classroom security, and refreshed corridor locker systems to create a more cohesive and modern learning environment.
Collaborative breakout areas within the corridors were also refreshed to support small group instruction, flexible learning, and student interaction beyond the classroom.
Renovating Core Spaces at Randall Middle School
At Randall Middle School, renovations focused on improving essential student and staff spaces throughout the building. The cafeteria and kitchenette were redesigned to improve functionality and create a more welcoming environment, while second-floor toilet rooms were renovated to meet current ADA accessibility requirements.
Within the 1952 classroom addition, eight classrooms and adjoining corridors received comprehensive upgrades including new flooring, ceilings, lighting, cabinetry, doors, and toilet rooms. Existing coat hook alcoves and storage closets were consolidated into streamlined corridor lockers, maximizing usable space and improving organization.
Together, the renovations at Randall Middle School and Cortland Junior/Senior High School create more accessible, functional, and engaging environments that support learning, athletics, collaboration, and long-term campus performance.
