A New Chapter for Middle Level Education
The renovations at Iroquois Middle School mark a new chapter in middle-level education for the Niskayuna Central School District. In response to a district-wide grade level reconfiguration, an evolving educational model, and a growing student population, Iroquois Middle School has been reimagined for the future.
The centerpiece of the project is a new two-story 30,000 square foot addition that houses four of the school’s seven grade-level teams.

Flexible & Collaborative Learning Environments
These areas are designed with flexibility and collaboration in mind, each including a science classroom, four adaptable core classrooms, a resource room, and shared breakout spaces.
The original building has been similarly updated, with 20 new classrooms and collaborative areas reflecting the look and function of the new wing.
A new library media center, technology and art rooms, and a music suite with ensemble spaces and practice rooms enhance the school’s ability to offer rich, hands-on learning experiences.

Designing for Comfort and Connection
The interior spaces reflect the school’s commitment to collaborative and flexible learning. The design emphasizes natural light, open-concept layouts, and bold, consistent color palettes—primarily red, gray, and white, reflecting the district’s colors and branding.

Angular light fixtures and sound baffles suspended from above add a contemporary edge, while the use of red accents reinforces school spirit and visual cohesion throughout the building.
Adaptable Finishes for Student Success
Furniture and finishes were selected with student comfort and adaptability in mind. Soft, modular seating in the classrooms and breakout spaces encourages informal collaboration and can be easily rearranged and writable wall surfaces support active learning and brainstorming sessions.
Altogether, the design successfully blends aesthetics with functionality, fostering an environment that promotes creativity, collaboration, and academic success.
