Playful and Intentional Use of Color

The Outpatient Pediatrics clinic designed with the team at Upstate expands their presence in the northern Syracuse region, improves access for families and the experience for staff.

Encompassing 21 examination rooms and an adjacent imaging suite, this renovation project carefully balances healthcare efficiency with child-focused comforts.

A colorful waiting room with open cubbies for the smaller visitors introduces the intentional design decisions throughout the suite.

Including smaller, movable furniture and select sound baffling around the check in counters, each element maintains the focus on comfort for kids and their families. At over 11,000 square feet this clinic is designed to feel bright, engaging and accessible for staff, parents and their little ones.

Pod concept

Using a pod concept in the layout of the suite, our team arranged the exam rooms + staff spaces along common corridors. Grouping these rooms of frequently accessed support around a simple to discover color-coded system blends comfortable wayfinding with a sense of play for the youngest patients.

Starting from the waiting room threshold, an integrated band of color within the flooring guides families to their respective pod corridor. Each pod welcomes you with a portal of color that continues as accent along the corridors and within the exam rooms.

The design creates an engaging environment that gives purpose to the playfulness, capturing kids’ attention, giving them something to focus on and interact with beyond the visit with their provider team.

Let’s create.

We believe architecture should be accessible, sustainable, and meaningful, with an emphasis on design that makes a positive and lasting impact.
