Replacing an Aging Bus Garage with a Center Designed for Today’s Fleet Needs
As part of a multi-phase Capital Improvement Project, the existing 1975 bus garage on Beach Road was replaced with a new 10,000-square-foot transportation facility designed to support the district’s daily transportation operations and vehicle maintenance needs.
Constructed on the same site, the new Solvay Transportation Center includes offices, support spaces, training areas, and a four-bay maintenance garage for servicing the district’s vehicle fleet. The surrounding site was also redesigned to improve circulation, parking, fueling operations, and overall efficiency.

Designed for Operations & Efficiency
Working closely with the district and transportation department, the design team maximized functionality on a compact site of less than one acre. The redesigned campus includes a new gas and diesel fuel island, parking for the district’s 35 buses, and secured perimeter fencing with card access-controlled gates.

Inside, the facility supports both operational and staff needs through offices for dispatchers and supervisors, file storage, training spaces, staff support areas, and updated restroom facilities.

Supporting Fleet Maintenance
The maintenance garage was designed to create a safe, efficient, and well-lit workspace for vehicle servicing and repair. Four repair bays feature large glass overhead doors and clerestory windows that bring natural light deep into the space, while LED lighting, vehicle lifts, equipment reels, and compressed air systems support day-to-day maintenance operations.
Additional spaces including tool storage, maintenance offices, oil and grease management rooms, and a parts mezzanine further support long-term fleet operations.

The new Solvay Transportation Center provides the district with a modern, efficient, and secure facility that supports transportation operations, staff needs, and long-term fleet maintenance for years to come.
