Designing Connections Between Students and Spaces
The Fayetteville-Manlius High School Capital Improvement Project was a comprehensive, multi-phased effort to modernize building systems and infrastructure while physically connecting the two main structures with a centralized two-story addition and updated educational programs.
Prior to the project, the high school consisted of two separate buildings—the former high school and middle school—connected only by a bridge on the east side and an art wing on the west side.

Modernizing Student Life and Dining
The primary vision was to unify the buildings and create a central connection with flexible, multipurpose spaces for the student body. Infilling the courtyard enclosed by the bridge and art wing created a wide range of new program opportunities while clearly reconnecting the two structures.

By introducing a two-story glass-enclosed volume linking the first and second floors with tiered seating, and by modifying the adjacent cafeteria spaces, the design team reimagined how students and staff circulate, gather for meals, and host events.

The added square footage enabled a complete reworking of food service, including expanded kitchen space, increased cafeteria seating, redesigned serving lines, casual dining options, a new broadcast journalism space, and staff support areas.
Along with a thoughtfully designed exterior gathering area, the infill addition exceeded expectations for how a central connection could serve the school community.

A New Dedicated STEM Wing
The new connection also created additional design opportunities. The outdated technology classrooms were located near the center of the building and required exterior access, which would be lost with the courtyard infill.
In response, the design team developed a new technology suite addition on the north side, placed adjacent to the science classrooms to form a dedicated STEM wing.

A Significant Investment in Student Experience
Together, the additions, renovations, and system upgrades reflect a strong partnership between the district and the design team and represent a significant investment in student experience, school identity, building performance, and community engagement.
The result is a revitalized campus core that supports learning and community with modern, flexible, and inspiring environments.
