Modernizing a 1962 School to Support the Future of Elementary Education
Fremont Elementary School underwent a major transformation as part of East Syracuse Minoa Central School District’s $49.8 million Capital Improvement Project. Originally designed by King + King in 1962, the existing 40,000-square-foot building received a complete interior renovation alongside a new 3,500-square-foot cafeteria and learning commons addition. The project focused on improving student safety and security, modernizing learning environments, and upgrading building infrastructure to better support students, staff, and the broader school community.

Reimagined Learning Spaces
Working closely with the district, the design team reconfigured the K–5 building to support more flexible and collaborative learning. Classrooms were redesigned to include small group instruction rooms, breakout areas, and adaptable learning zones across all grade levels.

A relocated main entrance and new cafeteria/learning commons addition create a more welcoming and connected experience for students, staff, and visitors. Additional upgrades throughout the school included improvements to the gymnasium, kitchen and serving areas, administrative offices, and building-wide HVAC, plumbing, electrical, and IT infrastructure systems.

The school’s main corridor was transformed into a new STEAM-focused environment by bringing together the Band, Music, Art, Library/Media Center, and Maker Space to encourage creativity, visibility, and interdisciplinary learning.

The renovation of Fremont Elementary School creates a safer, more flexible, and future-focused environment that supports both learning and community connection for generations of students to come.
